DECIDE

In my bedroom, I’ve decided a few things are important:

It needs to be clutter free. I sneak out each morning in the dark. Whether or not I have clutter on the floor could mean the difference between whether I trip and break my neck or not. Plus, clutter in the bedroom? Not exactly restful.

I need my clothes to be organized and ready to go. When I was living in a cluttered house, I spent way too many hours digging through laundry baskets in order to get dressed.

I need my bed to be made. I do laundry on my bed several times a week. (It’s a large, flat surface, perfect for folding and piling.) A made bed makes that task so much easier. Plus, I just love the feeling of slipping into the sheets of a made bed. Love it. Making my bed is one of the little things I can do every day to take care of my future self.

I want this room to feel cozy, efficient, restful, clean, and warm. Here’s how I work to create those feelings:

Sight: There is minimal clutter. The room looks clean and inviting. The floors are cleared and picked up. It’s dark and cozy when I need it to be, and bright and light during the day.

Smell: I want this room to smell like fresh air and clean laundry. Sadly, this is the room where our dog spends 90 percent of his time (his choice—I promise we are not locking him up in there). We open the windows in the early mornings and evenings and make sure that we vacuum three to four times per week to keep it smelling fresh.

Taste: Not a lot of taste going on in the bedroom. I’m okay with that. That way, there are no crumbs or spills on the floor—or on my clean laundry.

Touch: I want a comfy but firm mattress that we can sink into each night. I want fluffy bedding and lots of throw pillows to relax in during the day when I’m reading a book or resting my eyes.

Sound: I want the option to enjoy TV or music—or an audiobook while I’m folding clothes.

Now it’s your turn. What five feelings would you like to experience when you walk into your bedroom? List them at the end of the chapter. Then brainstorm ways you can experience those feelings through sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound. What would you like to change in your bedroom so that it creates the feeling you want to fall asleep to at night? Write down those ideas in the space at the end of the chapter.
